Gurdaspur: Over 26,000 people from 323 villages in Gurdaspur district have been affected due to the swollen Ravi river, presenting a significant challenge for the district administration in controlling the flow of water into the populated areas and simultaneously conducting relief and rescue operations.Over 250 animals have also died due to the floods so far.Confirming the loss of livestock, Gurdaspur deputy commissioner Dalvinderjit Singh informed that special teams from the animal husbandry department were working on-site in the affected areas to rescue animals.“There is significant loss to livestock due to the floods. According to the animal husbandry department, 243 animals died due to the floodwaters in the district,” said the DC, adding that the district administration was providing fodder for the animals, and veterinary doctors were also treating them.He also said by Friday evening, the administration’s teams safely evacuated more than 5,400 persons from the flood-affected areas, and 23 relief camps were set up within the district, of which 13 were currently active.“These camps are providing essential services, including food, mattresses for sleeping, dry ration, biscuits, milk for children, and other basic necessities,” said Dalvinderjit Singh.Ambulances have also been deployed to assist the people in the affected villages. By Friday, 52 medical camps were organised for the affected villagers, he added.It is learnt that six teams from the NDRF, three teams from the Indian Army, and one team from the BSF were supporting the district administration in the relief operations. These teams are reaching the affected areas by boats and other means to safely evacuate people and take them to secure locations.The DC informed that over 5,000 relief kits containing essential supplies were distributed among the flood victims. The distribution of relief materials will continue as long as needed. Furthermore, various social welfare organisations are also helping the people in the flood-affected areas, he said.Dalvinderjit Singh also informed that the water level in the Ravi river had decreased, and the water in the affected areas was also receding gradually.MSID:: 123602368 413 |
