The World ILT20 Development Tournament kicked off its third edition on Sunday at the ICC Academy, continuing its role as a launchpad for UAE’s emerging cricket talent.David White, CEO of World ILT20, said the competition has become a vital stepping stone for young players aspiring to feature in the full World ILT20 Season 4, which begins on December 2.“It’s a great opportunity for these young men to stake a claim for selection in the main tournament. Last year, the standard improved significantly, and I’m confident this year will be even better,” White said.He underlined how the tournament has helped raise the bar in professionalism. “It’s not only about skills. Attitude, fitness, strength and conditioning—everything has gone up a level. We’ve already seen players graduate from this event and succeed in the league itself. Playing in front of cameras and live audiences adds pressure but also motivation.”
The development event takes on added importance this year with the World ILT20 Player Auction scheduled soon after the Asia Cup 2025. Each franchise is required to include at least two UAE players in their XI, making the competition a prime scouting ground.“If selected, these players don’t just compete; they train with world-class coaches and share dressing rooms with some of the biggest names in cricket,” White noted.Looking ahead to Season 4 of the league, which runs from December 2 to January 4, White said the ILT20 is now firmly part of the global franchise calendar. “We’re no longer on the periphery. When people talk about the big leagues in the world, they mention World ILT20. We’re mainstream now, and we’re only getting bigger.”White also pointed out the timing of the league as a strength. “December and early January is festive, with Christmas and New Year holidays. That brings bigger crowds and adds a celebratory feel to the tournament.”The CEO further emphasized the broader impact on UAE cricket, saying the ILT20 has deepened the national team’s pool of talent. “The UAE now qualify for the Asia Cup and have shown they can beat strong opposition on their day. Exposure through the ILT20 has certainly helped, and with Afghanistan and Pakistan also familiar with these conditions, the Asia Cup promises to be exciting.”
